What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice from Chinese Traditional Medicine intended to realign the body’s energy system into healthy patterns and allow for a seamless flow of qi. During treatment, your practitioner inserts hair-thin needles into points throughout the body to help release tension and promote relaxation. The practice helps support women’s health by addressing mental and physical issues, PMS and pregnancy symptoms, and more.

By inserting needles into specific points throughout the body, your flow of energy will rebalance. It also stimulates the nervous system and muscle, helping to relieve pain.

Acupuncture should not be painful. The needles are so thin that often people don’t feel anything, aside from a mild aching at the point of insertion. If you’re in pain you should let your practitioner know immediately.

An initial acupuncture session usually lasts 90 minutes and involves an assessment of your general health, medical history and a physical examination, followed by insertion of the acupuncture needles. Repeat appointments will last around 45-60 minutes.

The risks of acupuncture are low, as long as your practitioner is a competent professional certified to perform the treatment. Potential side effects may include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted.

When performed properly by a trained professional, acupuncture during pregnancy is considered safe and has few risks. In fact, it can help ease pregnancy symptoms such as lower back pain, nausea, headaches, fatigue, and heartburn.
